Bedwetting or (enuresis) is a problem for many children which can cause discomfort, interuption to sleep and embarrassment. Bed wetting is often hereditary and while the condition can last many years it will eventually stop as your child grows out of this phase. Enuresis is common in both genders and despite popular belief it is not usually the result of drinking too much liquid before bed or laziness.

Some of the causes for bed-wetting are:

  6. Small bladder

Children usually achieve complete bladder control between the ages of six to seven and bed wetting can stop at these ages. Unfortunately for some children bed wetting continues after the ages of eight or nine. Bed wetting is beyond your child’s control and praising or punishing your child around this issue will not help.

  • Studies reveal that infants who are breast fed for three months or more are likely to have better bladder control.
  • Children who bed wet may be teased by their siblings and suffer embarrassment as a result of their condition. This will help to maintain their confidence and self-esteem and reduce teasing.
  • Bedwetting alarms are sensitive to moisture and can help to register in your child’s mind, the requirement to visit the bathroom when it is activated.
  • It may be advisable to talk with your local GP as your childs diet or deficienties in some neutrients may contribute to the problem of bed-wetting.

Infants that are breastfed will become hungry more quickly than those who are bottle-fed.

When you are sleep deprived and can hardly keep your eyes open the last thing you want to hear is that you will have to wait a year or more for relief. Some desperate moms have even questioned why there are sleeping pills for grownups and no baby sleeping aids or remedies. I believe in the natural approach to parenting whenever possible, but I have to admit succumbing to panic due to exhaustion myself.

For an infant, establishing a daily routine to include set nap times will contribute a great deal towards getting your baby to sleep through the night. Your baby must be taught that short periods of sleep are for daytime and longer periods of sleep are for night time.

Every mother’s process for relaxing her baby is unique, there is no definite set of rules for what should be involved. Whatever your baby sleeping routine works out to be; stick to it. Try not to vary from it from day to day. The best way to an ideal baby sleep routine, relies on mom having a routine.

You will have a calmer and more confident child if you are so predictable that baby always knows exactly what happens next.Develop routines that work for you and your baby. For many toddlers just the mention that “It is bedtime” sends them into sheer disarray. Find and Remind.  On the way to his room, think of something fun and exciting for your toddler to do the next day.   It could be an afternoon of play dough fun, or perhaps he has a party to go to, or finger painting, or a play in the park.  Remind him of it. A little secret: tell him you are looking forward to doing it with him (ensure that you are able to do this. Otherwise do not offer this statement.

3. The Bedroom: short and sweet.  This is an area many parents get wrong. At bedtime your toddler’s bedroom should be within the same atmosphere as when you were winding him down. Prepare his bedroom before you start the winding down process.  Bedroom atmosphere encompasses a night light and soft music.

The time you spend in your toddler’s room after he is in bed needs to be short and sweet. Sit on edge of the bed next to your toddler and read a story, softly. Stroke his hair or use his favorite toy. Quietly remind him of the fun that awaits him the next day if he gets a good night rest. Mention that you are also very tired and heading off to bed. Kiss him goodnight and off you go.

4. When he starts to cry, tell him you love him and you will check on him in a bit before you go to bed. Ignore his crying. While in his room do not appear stressed.  Know in your mind that all will be well.  Your toddler will feel this and it will help him adjust to his new bedtime routine.

In 9 out of 10 cases your toddler will fall asleep very shortly.  However, if you prolong your time in his room and show your fear of his crying he will recognize this and use it as a tool to get you to stay until he falls asleep, which causes him to stay awake longer, lessoning his sleep time and lessoning your free time.

Toddler sleep problems can yield an unhealthy toddler, and although a bedtime routine can take some time to firmly take effect, fixing toddler sleep problems has many rewards for parent and toddler.  All good things come in time, so be consistent and adhere to the bedtime routine on a nightly basis.

The intent of this article is to investigate further into the different aspects of feeding your small baby and examine the effects that feeding could perhaps have on a babys sleeping routine and habits.

Mixing Breast-feeding and Bottle Feedings

It is believed that a mixture of bottle and breast in feedings could potentially lead to sleeping problems. With each feeding, the breast is signaling to the brain that more milk needs to be produced for the following feeding. When a bottle is incorporated into feedings, this process could be interfered with. The breast will start to produce less milk due to the less frequent breast feedings.

Also, during the times when you do breast-feed your baby, he or she will not get as full with the breast-feeding because of the lessening of milk supply. Therefore your baby will require feeding more frequently which will mean his or her sleep patterns will be interrupted by the need for feeding.

Feeding your baby to sleep

Feeding your child until he or she goes to sleep may be creating a problem with their sleep patterns. Your baby will soon begin to recognize that you feed him or her at bedtime. This will become something they depend on and expect. Normally, this will be the situation with each waking throughout the night as well.

There are of course, techniques you can use to stop your baby from depending on feedings to fall asleep.

Firstly, change the time or the amount of time you feed your baby when nearing his or her bedtime. Doing so will gradually remove the association of bedtime with feeding.

Another option is to feed your child earlier in the evening instead of as a bedtime routine. When you do these things your baby will not associate feeding with bedtime. This will help your baby to learn to fall asleep on his or her own accord.

What are YOU eating and can it affect your babys sleeping pattern?

The answer quite simply is yes. As a breast-feeding mom,  everything that you drink or eat will affect your breast milk. If you do not eat the correct amount of foods and calories daily, your breast milk is greatly affected. It is important that you eat the recommended three meals daily and maybe a few snacks in between. Your milk needs to have adequate calories in it in order for your baby to feel nicely full and satisfied. If it does not, he or she will continue to feed longer until full.

You need to eat healthier foods and eat them more regularly, as well as having plenty to drink throughout the day. This will help your milk supply, thus helping your baby and his or her sleep patterns. The fuller your baby feels, the better he or she will sleep.

Will solids help your baby to sleep?

Many people believe this will help, but studies have not associated any change in babies who were fed by the breast and / or bottle and those who are fed solids. This has not been proven to help the baby to sleep at all. Generally, Doctors do not recommend adding solid foods prior to six months of age.

Even animals vocalize to calm their offspring – a cat’s purr reassures her kittens and lulls them to sleep. Find some calming music, baby lullaby CDs are perfect, but it can be classical music, jazz, new age, or anything that you and your baby enjoy. Turn the volume down low and see your baby sleep problems disappear as both your baby and you relax, and your baby drifts off to sleep.

Leave the music playing once your baby falls asleep. Then if your baby wakes she will soon drift off again.
